This year’s theme is Embracing Intersectionality: Celebrating the Rich Tapestry of Black Identity. The theme honors the collective and individualized experiences within the Black community based on identities such as ability, gender, sexuality, class, religion, and more. Intersectionality, a concept introduced by UW alumna and legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw, explores how the intersection of social identities and other factors influence our experiences and opportunities in life.
